The biggest surprise at the show, to me, was the JBL M-2 Master Reference Monitors. These speakers are from JBL’s Studio Monitor series. They have no passive crossover and have to be bi-amped and used with an electronic crossover. Currently they are being sold with an electronic crossover and a pair of Mark Levinson amps. This system had great potential. I would love to hear them with a little more high-end of a crossover and maybe a real high end tube amp on top with a really fast amp on the bass. They had great potential I tell you.
The Coincident Speaker Technology room was sounding really good. Coincident was playing their Secret Victory II with two amps. First they used the Turbo 845SE integrated. I believe this may be one of the best valued super-tube amp out there. They were also showing their new little 8 watt SET the Dynamo 34SE that has an introductory price of $999.00. I was shocked by how good it sounded.
As always Classic Audio Loudspeakers room was sounding great.
The Nola Metro Grand References, driven by Audio Research Electronics were sounding very, very good. They are also strikingly easy on the eyes.
The Aaudio Imports room always has some of the best equipment at the show. This year Brian was showing the Ypsilon electronics, the Hartvig and the Thales turntable, as well as the big Lansche speakers.
I’ll close this first part of the show RMAF 2013 show reports with a picture of my favorite sound at the show. You should have heard them playing Porgy and Bess.
